SUMMARY:No Idyll Hands! Climber Stewardship Day
DESCRIPTION:The Idyllwild Climbers Alliance holds its annual No Idyll Hands stewardship day on Saturday\, June 13\, 2026\, in the Tahquitz and Suicide rock areas above Idyllwild. It is a work day for the people who climb there\, and the ICA has a full project list lined up alongside a silent auction and a gear swap. \nThe service work this year covers trail maintenance and graffiti removal on the signs near the Suicide Rock climbers trail. Crews will also set the foundational posts for an information kiosk the ICA has planned for the area\, and install a commemorative sign for Clark Jacobs\, the influential local climber and teacher who introduced hundreds of people to these rocks. \nA silent auction of climbing gear donated by ICA sponsors runs alongside the work\, with all proceeds going to the alliance. New this year is a gear swap that is open to the whole town. There is no cost to swap\, though donations are welcome. \nThe day runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Idyllwild Town Hall. SUMMARY:Half Dome Cables 2026 Preseason Lottery
DESCRIPTION:The Half Dome cables route is one of the most popular hikes in the national park system\, drawing far more demand than the trail can safely handle. NPS limits the number of hikers on the cables each day to reduce congestion on the exposed granite slabs and decrease the risk of accidents — the final 400 feet to the summit involve fixed steel cables on a near-vertical face\, and crowding on that section is genuinely dangerous. Permits are distributed by lottery rather than first-come\, first-served to give everyone a fair shot regardless of how fast they can click. \nThere are two ways to get a permit. The preseason lottery runs each year in March\, with results posted in mid-April and a confirmation deadline in mid-May. If you don’t win the preseason draw\, daily lotteries run throughout the season — apply two days in advance of your desired hiking date.
