REI Moving Encinitas Store to Carlsbad and Expanding Kearny Mesa Location

REI Co-op has announced that it will relocate its Encinitas store to Carlsbad in 2025 as part of a larger expansion plan.
The new 28,000-square-foot store will open in La Costa Town Square, offering a more spacious location compared to the current Encinitas site, which has been in operation since 2004. The Carlsbad store is expected to open next spring, with all Encinitas employees invited to transfer to the new location.
This move is part of a broader strategy for REI’s growth in California and nationwide, with new stores also planned for Chico and Elk Grove, along with locations in New York, Colorado, and Washington. REI also plans future openings in Texas and Utah.
In addition to the Carlsbad relocation, REI is expanding its Kearny Mesa store in San Diego, which has served the community since 1994. REI currently operates 11 stores in Southern California, providing a range of outdoor gear and services, including a full-service bike shop at each location.
While REI’s new stores in other regions will feature ski and snowboard services, the Southern California expansion focuses primarily on activities like hiking, cycling, and camping, reflecting the outdoor culture of the area.
This expansion comes as REI continues to grow its presence, with 10 new stores opening across the U.S. by the end of 2024.
