California King Tides Project: Documenting a Glimpse of Our Future Coastline

As winter approaches, Californians have a unique opportunity to glimpse the future effects of climate change on the state’s coastline, thanks to the California Coastal Commission’s King Tides Project.

The project invites community members to photograph the highest tides of the year—known as king tides—helping to document how these extreme tides interact with infrastructure, natural features, and vulnerable areas.

King tides, which occur when the gravitational forces of the sun, moon, and Earth align, are a naturally occurring phenomenon, resulting in tides one to two feet higher than normal. While not caused by climate change, these events provide a preview of what rising sea levels may look like in the decades to come as global warming intensifies.

The King Tides Project is a citizen science initiative, encouraging public participation to create a visual record of coastal flooding and erosion. These images not only help validate scientific models but also aid planners and policymakers in developing strategies to address future sea level rise.

The next king tides in California are expected from December 13–15, 2024. The Coastal Commission is calling on volunteers to safely document high tides during these dates, particularly in areas where the water meets man-made structures, beaches, or other landmarks.

Photos can be uploaded to the project’s website, where they will be added to an interactive map showcasing king tide images from across the state.

Tips for Participating:

• Stay Safe: Always keep an eye on the ocean and avoid slippery rocks or unstable ground. Never turn your back on the waves.
• Include Landmarks: Photos with recognizable features help provide context for the potential impacts of rising seas.

Beyond raising awareness, the project offers a hands-on way to engage with climate science and learn about the challenges facing California’s iconic coastline. The collected images help illustrate the tangible risks posed by sea level rise, serving as a powerful tool for education and advocacy.
