Getting to the China Ranch Trailhead

From Tecopa, California, head south on Old Spanish Trail Highway for approximately 3.5 miles until you reach the turnoff for China Ranch Road. Follow the well-marked dirt road for another 1.5 miles to the parking area at China Ranch Date Farm, which serves as the trailhead. The road is passable for most vehicles, but exercise caution after heavy rains as it can become muddy.

If you’re coming from Las Vegas (about 85 miles), take Interstate 15 south to exit 246 for CA-127. Drive south for 45 miles to Tecopa, then follow the above directions.

Trail Overview

Starting at the parking area, the trail begins with a gentle descent into the lush greenery along Willow Creek. As you follow the well-maintained gravel path, interpretive signs provide insights into the natural and cultural history of the Amargosa Basin.

Evidence of early explorers who traveled the Old Spanish and Mormon Trails is visible along the route, adding historical depth to the hike.

The loop offers terrific views of the Amargosa River, a critical water source in the Mojave Desert. Seasonal stream crossings may be required to access a short slot canyon near the loop’s top, offering a unique geological feature worth exploring.
