Campground Overview
Mahogany Flat Campground is a primitive, no-fee camping area perfect for those who enjoy remote, high-altitude adventures. Set in a picturesque forest of Pinyon Pines and Junipers, campers are rewarded with panoramic views of Death Valley below. This location serves as an excellent base for hikers looking to explore Telescope Peak and other trails in the Panamint Range.
Despite its beauty and unique setting, Mahogany Flat lacks many amenities. There is no potable water, so campers should bring their own supply. Vault toilets are available seasonally, and trash collection is provided only during certain periods.
Fires are permitted in designated NPS fire pits, but collecting firewood is prohibited; campers must bring their own firewood, and fires are banned from June 15 to September 15, as well as during high fire danger periods.
Access to the campground can be challenging due to the steep, unpaved road, which requires a high-clearance vehicle. During winter, the campground may be inaccessible due to snow and ice. RVs and trailers are allowed, but only up to 25 and 12 feet in length, respectively, due to the narrow and winding road.
For those who make the trek, Mahogany Flat Campground offers an unparalleled, secluded camping experience with striking views and proximity to Death Valley’s highest peaks.
