Getting to Bonita Falls Trailhead
To reach the Bonita Falls trailhead from Los Angeles, take the I-10 East toward San Bernardino. Merge onto the 215 North and then the 210 East. Exit at Sierra Avenue and turn left onto Lytle Creek Road. Continue on Lytle Creek Road for about 8 miles until you reach an unsigned turnout parking area just past the Front Country Ranger Station.
If you’re coming from the Inland Empire, take the 15 North and merge onto the 210 West. Exit at Sierra Avenue and follow the same directions as above. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required to park at the trailhead, and it’s advisable to arrive early, especially on summer weekends, as parking can fill up quickly.
Trail Overview
Starting at the trailhead, hikers will follow a well-maintained path along the South Fork Lytle Creek wash. The first half-mile traverses flat terrain, making it accessible for hikers of all ages. As you continue, watch for the split in the trail that leads to the base of Bonita Falls—this side trail adds a quarter-mile to the hike but is well worth the effort.
The trail meanders through a lush canyon, providing glimpses of wildflowers and the sounds of rustling leaves and flowing water. Wildlife, such as birds and small mammals, can often be spotted along the way, adding to the trail’s charm.
Upon reaching the base of the falls, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Bonita Falls cascading down multiple tiers. The upper tier features a stunning 195-foot drop, followed by a series of slides and cascades that descend into the canyon. Although the area has been marred by graffiti and litter in places, the natural beauty of the falls remains a significant draw for visitors.
