The Trail
Named for the longtime trail boss of the Desert Riders equestrian club, the Art Smith Trail begins at Highway 74 near the Visitor Center. Over the course of 8.3 miles, hikers gain more than 1,400 feet in elevation, eventually reaching an intersection with Dunn Road.
However, be aware that this road is closed to vehicle traffic and should not be considered a shuttle site. For those wishing to extend their hike another 8 miles toward Palm Springs, the Hahn Buena Vista Trail can be accessed, followed by the Wild Horse and Garstin Trails. Alternatively, you can descend to Cathedral City via Dunn Road and the Cathedral Canyon Trail.
The junction with the Hopalong Cassidy Trail is located 1.5 miles from the Art Smith Trailhead. If you choose this route, prepare for a series of climbs and descents that add to the challenge while rewarding you with stunning desert vistas.
The Art Smith Trail is truly one of the signature trails in the National Monument, showcasing breathtaking views across the Coachella Valley to the Little San Bernardino Mountains and Joshua Tree National Park, as well as the vibrant cities of Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage.
As you hike, you’ll escape the sights and sounds of urban life, venturing through hidden canyons and sporadic lush desert fan palm oases. While these oases are inviting, it’s important to stick to the trail to avoid disturbing the desert animals that rely on these vital habitats.
Keep an eye out for Peninsular Desert Bighorn Sheep, which are often sighted along the trail. Be sure to carry plenty of water and start your hike early in the day to avoid the intense midday sun, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on this iconic desert trail.
