Sunset Peak Trail Guide
Sunset Peak Trail is a moderate 6.5-mile hike in the Angeles National Forest that offers terrific views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
This out-and-back trail features diverse terrain, including rocky paths and shaded forest areas, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,200 feet. The trail is ideal for those seeking a relatively accessible hike that rewards with picturesque vistas, particularly during sunset, when the peaks are bathed in warm hues.
Due to recent fires in the area, checking in with the visitor’s center is wise to ensure the trail is open.

Getting to Sunset Peak Trailhead
Get on Mount Baldy Road, travel to Mount Baldy Village, and turn left on Glendora Road. The trailhead is about three-quarters of a mile ahead on the left. It has a small parking area, so arrive early to secure a spot, especially on weekends.
The Trail
Starting at the Sunset Peak Trailhead, the trail begins with a gentle ascent through a shaded forest of pine and oak trees. The first mile features a well-maintained path, making it accessible for most hikers.
As you progress, the trail steepens, leading you to an area where you will encounter granite outcrops and sweeping views of the San Gabriel Mountains. The elevation gain becomes more noticeable, but the scenic rewards motivate hikers to push through the challenging sections.
Around the halfway point, the trail opens up to panoramic vistas, where you can see the sprawling valleys below and distant peaks. This spot is perfect for a short rest and photo opportunities.
Look for native plants such as manzanita and sagebrush, as well as wildlife, including various bird species and, if you’re lucky, maybe even deer.
As you approach the summit, the trail narrows and winds through rocky terrain, requiring careful footing. The final ascent presents breathtaking views, making the effort worthwhile.
